This is where the wool comes from...
Finnish Landrace Kainuun Harmaa Variety. Less than a thousand head in existence.
Bred and raised by Anne Sulonen and Jussi Moisanen on their registered organic farm in the hills behind Värtsilä.

Shearing time... Master shearer from Estonia.
A patient and excellent teacher.
Anne and Roddy are now shearing sheep themselves and
with practice, hope to cope with an increasing number of sheep
as other local breeders turn organic and take on the
Kainuun Harmaa as part of their flocks.

Veriseitikki (Dermocybe sanguinea), the brightest and the best of the Seitikki dyeing mushrooms.
It gives beautiful reds to rusty oranges. Seitikki are easy to find up here and straightforward to dye with but you do need quite a number...
Autumn in the forest is a beautiful and "fruitful" time.
Mushrooms and berries everywhere, to eat, to dye with and for profit...
Boletus edulis, (the King Bolete, Porcini, Steinpilz, or Cep) being the favourite "cash crop" in the forests around here.
Mushroom season in Carelia has to be seen to be believed...

Hubble bubble...etc...

More yarn dyed with fresh woad...
Anne is also growing woad this year, so not only do we have organic wool
but we will have organic woad too...

The "master" removing a beautiful fleece...
The wool ranges from a light grey-white to a deep steely blue-grey
One of the distinguishing features of the Kainuun Harmaa is the dark back and shoulders.

We dye about a kilo of raw wool at a time in a "pata"
The wool is first sorted into the different colours
rinsed and then sent to the dyepot.

Summer dyeing with Lupins...
It gets very hot here in the summer and does not get dark at all...

A great Finnish amenity, the public mat washing "jetty".
These are found in nearly every Finnish town, city or village.
Complete with long rinsing basins for those who like to work standing up,
drying racks and sometimes huge mangles, they are the perfect place
for washing carpets, making felt and rinsing wool...
Every summer, even in the big cities like Helsinki, the racks of traditional rag rugs hang drying in the sun
It is a real family event with everyone from Grandma to the grandkids taking part,
including beer and bikinis and lots of pine soap and water, it's fun for all the family...
(It also lets you see what kind of rugs your neighbours have...)

"Janisjoki" (Hare River) looking towards our back garden, early December before the freeze.
You find not only trout, pike-perch, grayling and salmon in our river but beavers too...

This is real, not manipulated... taken from the front yard last fall.
The sky up here is always impressive, but this was one of it's more apocalyptic moments...

Lichens...

Looking down into our valley and Sääperi lake...
With thousands of migrant birds every year, and a surprising number of birdwatchers
from all over Europe and beyond, it can get quite impressive in the Spring and Autumn.
Our favourites are the Cranes which seem somehow pre-historic as they slowly circle with their bizarre cries...

Janisjoki
In the winter it's the perfect place to walk the dog,
practice your skiing or race your skidoo...
You can even try ice-hole fishing, although that's much better on Sääperi lake.
